Summary

You started this chapter by looking at the hierarchical file system structure of Solaris. Solaris considers nearly everything on your computer a file, and all files must have an owner and a group.

Then, you looked at navigating the file system and file modification commands. It's also important to know the default directories and their intended purposes, as well as how to manage links within the Solaris file system.

Finally, you examined the base security system of Solaris 9: file permissions. You should be comfortable with reading permissions, as well as setting them in both absolute and symbolic modes. You also examined SetUID and SetGID permissions, sticky bits, and the umask.
