LDAP client profile
The parameters needed on a client computer in order to use the LDAP naming service.
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)
A networking protocol originally designed as a directory service to hold objects and values for those objects. Now, LDAP is also a naming service used in Solaris. LDAP can replace the functionality of NIS and NIS+.
Line Printer (LP) print service
The Solaris service that manages all printing on the computer.
Live Upgrade
One of the four Solaris installation programs. Live Upgrade is designed to upgrade Solaris while the computer is still running. Upon a reboot, the new operating system will take over.
loadable kernel modules
Another name for device drivers, as they are loaded into the kernel when a device is accessed.
local area network (LAN)
A network in which all computers are in a small geographical area and linked by high-speed connections.
local disk set
The default disk set located on each host. These disks cannot be taken over by other computers (as opposed to a shared disk set, which can be taken over by other computers).
local files
One of the Solaris naming services, local files are files located on each computer in the /etc directory.
Loopback File System (LOFS)
A virtual file system that enables you to create a new virtual file system within an existing file system. Files and directories in this new virtual file system can be accessed either by their original pathname, or by their new virtual pathname.
