Chapter 37. Making Money with Google AdSense and AdWords

As you recall from Chapter 1, "Inside Google," Google only looks to be a search technology company. While it does develop and distribute all manner of search-based services, Google makes its moneyand lots of itby selling advertising.

Google sells ads on its own search results pages, as well as throughout its entire network of sites (Gmail, Froogle, you name it). It also sells ads on other sites, both big and small. As I said, that's where the money comes from.

Now you can share in some of Google's advertising profits. Google's AdSense program lets you add Google advertising to your own website, and take a cut of all moneys generated. You can then spend your profits by buying ads on Google's site, via the AdWords programand let those ads drive traffic to your site, where you can sell more merchandise or generate more clicks or whatever it is that you do.
